52W Mark III – Week 39: Homestead

I’ve covered a lot of ground1 on the topic of “Homestead” in past posts. As a result, it’s been hard to think of something new for this week’s prompt for the 52 Ancestors Challenge – so much so that I’m now a week late.

What I can offer is this handy graphic that might be of use to family historians trying to find their ancestors’ homesteads in the Canadian Prairies.

Note: “HBC” stands for “Hudson’s Bay Company”

  1. Another of my contacts said her husband’s family went across Canada so maps would be good.

I also liked the cartoon about owning puns. I agree with it. Puns are good.

I did not write on this subject as I couldn’t think of a particular place that we regarded as “home”. we have had many homes though.

    1. Plagiarising myself from back in April: “A ‘steppe’ is a geographic and ecological region consisting of grassy plains. Some steppes are referred to as savanna and prairie. The largest steppe in the world, the Great Steppe or Eurasian Steppe, stretches from Ukraine to China. The Canadian prairies and the American great plains are other examples of of steppes.” On that last point, when I was in social studies in elementary school in Saskatchewan, the Canadian prairies were described as steppes.
